General Questions

How does the GPS system work?

The GPS system consists of 24 satellites each of which transmit a coded signal specific to the individual satellite. A GPS receiver detects and decodes the signals that it receives and based on the information contained can determine its' position relative to the satellites and from there, its' location on or above the earth. A minimum of 3 satellites must be visible to obtain a position. The accuracy of the position improves as the number of visible satellites increases.

The accuracy of the position depends on the number of satellites that the locator device can see. If you are indoors, go outside and find a location that has a clear view of the sky. Locations such as urban canyons with large numbers of multi-story buildings can also obstruct GPS signals, a clear view of the sky is necessary to get a position.

Yes, A SIM card is needed to access the cellular network so that the locator can report its' position to the servers monitoring it. The SIM required supports 2G GSM with GPRS service for data. A standard monthly plan with at least 10MB of data is recommended.

This is a URL that is needed for data communications and is provided by your service provider. Contact your service provider and ask them "What access point is my SIM card provisioned to use"?

Yes, if there is 2G GSM and GPRS coverage in your area.

Yes, to access the information from the locator, you need access to the www.LocationNow.com website.

The warranty period is 1 year from the date of activation of the device. Labour for repair will be at no cost to the customer during the warranty period. The warranty does not cover product failure caused by misuse by the user, applied over voltage, accidental damage or intentional un-authorized tampering with the device. Laipac's technical department will do an analysis of the RMA item and advise the customer if there will be any charges relating to the repair of the device.

You should start recharging the battery as soon as it is practical. There is still some useful life in the battery, but a low battery can have trouble communicating with the cellular network, and maintaining a position fix with the GPS satellites. Recharge as soon as possible after receiving the low battery warning.

Using the Location Now Website, log in, select the locator that produced the data you want, select Show On Map from the History icon and enter the dates and times to be covered. The data will be displayed in a new window as either an event log, or a map display as the user desires.

The battery should be fully recharged after 3-4 hours using the charging system that is provided by the device. The battery life will depend on usage such as how frequently it reports to the server and how much it is moving around versus remaining in a single location.

Make sure that you are in an area with a clear view of the sky, not indoors, or underground, GPS signal strength is not very high and does not penetrate into homes or underground structures. Recharging the battery if it is low will also help.

Yes, the latest firmware releases are available on the Laipac.com website through updated Location Now Suite software. If the software detects an older firmware when you connect to your device, it will prompt you for permission to update the firmware on your device.

An Android app is available in the Play Store, an iOS app is available through Apples' App Store. Search for LocationNow to locate the app in both stores.

Lola

The GSM LED will flash once every 5 seconds to save on power. Press the call button once and the GPS and GSM LEDs will both either be flashing or solid. After a few minutes the GSM LED will go back to flashing once every 5 seconds.

The volume is set using the Location Now Suite software, the Audio section is found in the Advance menu.

Yes, updating the Lola's firmware requires the LocationNow Suite software. Each release of LocationNow Suite contains the most recent version of the Lola firmware. LocationNow Suite will ask permission to update the firmware if it detects that the Lola's current firmware is older than the version that it has.

Plug in the Lola and verify that the LEDs come on. Wait until the SOS Back Light turns off. Use a replacement micro USB cable should the issue persist. If the Lola does not show anything, or if this procedure was completed and it still shuts off, contact support@laipac.com.

You should start recharging the battery as soon as it is practical. There is still some useful life in the battery, but a low battery can have trouble communicating with the cellular network, and maintaining a position fix with the GPS satellites. Recharge as soon as possible after receiving the low battery warning.

Generate an event history report using the LocationNow platform that covers the timeframe at issue. Examine the data in the battery column carefully. If the percentage was decreasing throughout the night and into the next day, the Lola was not charging. If the battery indication appears full and decreases within a short timeframe, contact support@laipac.com with your report.

Bracelet

Once the band has been closed and initialized, the bracelet will send alert SMS (text) messages and emails to the account owner and any responders if the band is opened or cut such that the bracelet is no longer secured to its' wearer.

Yes, updating the Bracelet' s firmware requires the LocationNow Suite software. Each release of LocationNow Suite contains the most recent version of the Bracelet firmware. LocationNow Suite will ask permission to update the firmware if it detects that the Bracelet' s current firmware is older than the version that it has.

On boot up, the device will display a time that may or may not be correct. Once the locator will be able to access a time from either the GSM system or the GPS system and will update the time and time zone data to display the current time.

Plug in the bracelet and verify that the screen comes on. When the display is shown, power off the bracelet. The LCD will display "Charging…". Wait until the display changes to "Complete!" before trying again. Use a replacement micro USB cable should the issue persist. If the bracelet does not show anything on the display, or if this procedure was completed and it still shuts off, contact support@laipac.com for more information.

Starfinder Lite 201

They are used for monitoring different aspects of a vehicle or system based on an on/off method. Examples include: Ignition on/off, AC on/off, gas cap open/closed, door open/closed, counting.

It is used for recording a change or variance in a vehicle or system based on voltage level. Examples include: gas level, oil level, weight level, temperature level.

Alerts can be sent to the primary account holder, and up to four responders. Email alerts require a valid and verified email address for each responder. Additionally each responder can have an SMS (text) message sent to their mobile phones; if the phone's number is supplied and LocationNow supports the service provider. (Not generally supported outside of North America at this time.)

Type in the e-mail address that will receive the alerts and it will appear red. A verification e-mail will be sent to the e-mail address. Click on the validation link and the e-mail address will be validated. Refresh the www.locationnow.com page and the e-mail address will change to green. At this point, the e-mail address is setup to receive alerts.

Type in the SMS number that will receive alerts and it will appear red. A verification e-mail will be sent to the e-mail address the SMS number is tied to, example, responder 1 e-mail address will receive the e-mail verification for the SMS number in responder 1. The SMS number will receive a validation code. Click the validation link in the e-mail and enter the validation code received by SMS. Refresh the www.locationnow.com page and the SMS number will change to green. At this point the SMS number is set up to receive alerts.

Currently English, French, Spanish, Chinese, Czech, Russian, Arabic, German and Italian are supported.

LocationNow Suite

  1. Lola – Press and hold the power and Talk buttons for 3 seconds then release.
  2. Bracelet – Press and hold the Enter and Call/Send buttons for 3 seconds then release.
  3. Starfinder Lite 201 – use a pen or paperclip to press the RST button on the front panel of the Starfinder Lite for 3 seconds then release.

A computer running the Windows/7 or Windows/8 operating systems.

Download the LocationNow Suite from www.laipac.com on the main page. Right click on the file and select Run as Administrator, and follow the instructions.

Android App

Yes, a free app that works like the LocationNow Website is available in the Play Store.

This is normal behaviour; the LocationNow Android App is designed for monitoring, making minor changes to the configuration and operations of your locator. It is not designed to receive alerts generated by your locator. Alerts are delivered by SMS (text) messages, and email.
